Trieste: between Carso and the Sea

Trieste is the Central European city par excellence, an amazing compendium of elegant architecture and historic Habsburg cafes, a border area where you can feel the mix of so many cultures.
On oneside the rugged karst headland and on the other the sea that creeps up into the city to embrace it. Trieste is surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean when the air is bright and purified by the bora wind, and is magical when the sun sets into the sea on the horizon.
Trieste’s special atmosphere inspired literary greats such as James Joyce, Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba. A walk in the huge and impressive Unity Square overlooking the sea will give you an idea of this atmosphere. The architectural style of Trieste buildings is eclectic: neo-classical, art nouveau, baroque, as well as Roman ruins and buildings from the Hapsburg empire.
Enjoy a long walk on the pier or on the beach in the summer, only to discover the pleasure of entering one of the many historic cafes to relax. The people of Trieste have a real passion for coffee and for the many different rites for savoring it.
But even a tour in the surrounding area will not disappoint: the white cliffs of the rugged and wild coastline, small bays and trails steeped in the scents of the Mediterranean, the castles of Miramare and Duino, which directly overlook the sea, the karst promontory, colors, traditions and distinctive flavors, and very special natural features, including the Grotta Gigante, the largest tourist cave in the world.
